AvMar specializes in crew leasing and payroll processing for both US and foreign flagged vessels. Our crew leasing structure in the Isle of Man and administrative offices located in Ft. Lauderdale can be of tremendous value to yacht managers, owners, captains and crew.
US flagged vessels with US crew must contend with payroll taxes, including quarterly and yearly tax filings. Needless to say, dealing with such reports and the IRS and State of Florida can be complex and time consuming. AvMar can relieve yacht owners and managers of this stress by handling it all from our Ft. Lauderdale office.
The complexities of foreign flagged vessels, on the other hand, can be even more daunting. US Immigration laws require that foreign crew in the United States on a B1/B2 visa are required to be paid from sources outside the US. This can present a problem for US owners of foreign flagged vessels. Utilizing our affiliate office in Europe can alleviate such problems, as there are no reporting regulations in the Isle of Man.

My crew agency performs background checks for us why should we perform another background check?
Answer: Many agencies perform superficial background checks, our checks are more detailed. For example, if you were to run a criminal back ground check on a potential crew member only convictions would appear, however if he was arrested five times and never convicted, you would never know.
Why should I spend thousands of dollars on detailed security checks?
Answer: Obviously there is a cost benefit factor when performing check. When you are paying a Captain or Engineer $100,000 a year to manage a multi-million dollar vessel, the cost benefit of a detailed back ground check makes sense, however a deck hand might require a more simplified check. Also keep in mind that in the competitive market of chartering your vessel, being able to tell a potential client that the crew taking care of their family has been thoroughly examined is important not only for the client but the owner who is insuring the clients’ safety.

AvMar offers a group health insurance plan for crew on our payroll with Aetna Global Benefits. This global plan covers crew anywhere they may reside or travel worldwide. We did not delve into looking for a health insurance plan lightly and took a lot of time and effort to find the right one. After much research we found that Aetna had the most to offer our crew and we continue to get positive feedback from those on the plan, further validating our choice.
AGB provides quality care and member support services 24 hours a day, worldwide, with access to member service representatives via toll free phone, fax, or email. The plan assures members have access to the best care possible, connecting them with qualified medical experts and facilities in over 500 international destinations.
The plan AvMar offers includes Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, in addition to the medical, vision, and dental coverage. Furthermore, the plan of benefits includes the following programs:
The AGB online resources offer a wide range of tools and information to help crew better understand and use their global benefits. Access to the website requires a username and password, which can be initially set up once the ID card arrives. The site is fairly user friendly and will walk through the registration process step-by-step.
AvMar Payroll Services office staff is more than happy to assist crew with all facets of the health insurance plan. We understand that insurance can be confusing and frustrating and try to make the entire process as painless as possible, from initial sign up to the submission of claims. We encourage our crew to call or email our office with any questions or problems that may arise.
